Creation of Magic
The dwarves became self-sustaining but kept to the earth from whence they came. They weren't forced but stayed at their own will and gladly accepted the occasional visits from the angels. It is said, however, that no deity ever visited the dwarves but that Moradin became the angel in charge of them. Unfortunately, the mining operation of the dwarves had an unknown side effect, which passed by unnoticed. If it had been noticed, the deities could have prevented it but they oversaw it in their constant joyful and playful mood. Retam noticed but decided to leave the fate of Aspenta in the hands of his toys. It became a game for him, a show that was played out without him ever intervening.
The gems held such great power because of the great cataclysm. They were rifts that had been overwhelmed with so much power that they had solidified, thus barring the powers within them. It is known to this day that the earth and the minerals within have great barring effects, both physically but also magically and mentally. This large power that was sealed within the earth was slowly released as the dwarves mined the world. It couldnt find a way to manifest itself, so it flowed through the world as an invisible entity and became known as "Magic".
